You may have seen news reports regarding a recent study alleging that sucralose or Splenda® Brand Sweeteners caused poor health effects. Unequivocally, the alleged findings of this study as reported by the news media are false and no one should rely on this study in any way.  Splenda is a safe and effective alternative to sugar and is recommended every day by Healthcare Professionals to aid in weight loss and diabetes management. 

Splenda brand sweetener products are safe and effective.

Splenda branded products and the ingredient sources we use to manufacture our products were not included or tested in this research.

The headlines and media coverage falsely reported that Splenda and its sweetening ingredient sources were a part of this study. They were not. Splenda and its ingredients were never studied or tested. This reporting is false, and we are sorry, that you, the consumers we work to serve every day, experienced anxiety, confusion or uncertainty based on the false reporting of this study.  We will be taking action to respond to the inaccurate reporting.

The focus of this study, sucralose-6-acetate (S6A), is not the same as sucralose; the ingredient used in Splenda.

The study focuses on the chemical compound S6A which is distinctly different than sucralose and not used in Splenda brand products.  Media coverage of this study inaccurately and improperly implied that S6A and sucralose are the same, but they are not.  Sucralose is a popular, zero-calorie sweetener that has been used by millions of people for over 25 years to sweeten foods and beverages.  It is also globally approved by food safety organizations including the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). 

S6A is not present in Splenda brand products.

As the leading brand in low- and no-calorie sweeteners, we, and our suppliers, rigorously and routinely test and monitor for any impurities in our products. We can confirm that S6A is not present in Splenda Brand sucralose down to the lowest detection limit possible, which is .001% sensitivity level. As a result, we are confident that there are no S6A in Splenda products. The sucralose in Splenda Brand sweetener is made 100% in the USA so we can monitor and enforce the highest quality standards.

In Conclusion

To summarize, the study never tested Splenda products and focused on an impurity that is not present in our products.  Unfortunately, the study itself and the Public Relations and media coverage of this study falsely informed you that this was about Splenda brand products, which led to confusion and the spreading of misinformation. Zero-calorie sweeteners and Splenda brand products are absolutely safe and effective, and have been used by millions of people for over 25 years.
