Why are dextrose, maltodextrin, and erythritol used in some Splenda® Brand Sweeteners?

Since sucralose is over 600 times sweeter than sugar, only a small amount is needed to produce the sweetness of sugar. Maltodextrin and dextrose provide volume and texture, making Splenda easier to use.

  • Splenda Original:
    • Splenda contains zero calories and 1 gram or less of carbohydrate per serving (depending on product – see Splenda Original product pages for product ingredients), which can help people with diabetes manage their calorie and carbohydrate intake.

On its own, stevia leaf extract is 200-350 times sweeter than sugar. As a result, we use other ingredients to add volume and texture to the stevia leaf extract without negatively impacting the taste. Our stevia packets blend includes dextrose – a commonly used zero-calorie ingredient. Dextrose provides volume and texture, making Splenda Stevia easier to use. If only stevia leaf extract were in a packet, it would be impossible to distribute it in your drinks and food because it would be such a small amount.
