What is SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener?
SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener contains sucralose (SPLENDA® Brand
Sweetener), the no calorie sweetener with no unpleasant aftertaste. SPLENDA®
No Calorie Sweetener can be used virtually anywhere sugar is used. It can
also be used in cooking and baking in a variety of recipes. Like many no
and low calorie sweeteners, each serving of SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener
contains a very small amount of common food ingredients, e.g., dextrose
and/or maltodextrin, for volume. Because the amount of these ingredients
is so small, SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener still has an insignificant
calorie value per serving and meets FDA's standards for "no calorie" sweeteners.
SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener comes in two forms for consumers, granulated
and packet. The granulated form of SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener measures
and pours just like sugar. SPLENDA® Packets provide a convenient way
to add sweetness without guilt!

How is SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener made?
SPLENDA® is the brand name for the ingredient sucralose. It is made
through a patented, multi-step process that starts with sugar and converts
it to a no calorie, non-carbohydrate sweetener. The process selectively
replaces three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with three chlorine
atoms. Chlorine is present naturally in many of the foods and beverages
that we eat and drink every day ranging from lettuce, mushrooms and table
salt. In the case of sucralose, its addition converts sucrose to sucralose,
which is essentially inert. The result is an exceptionally stable sweetener
that tastes like sugar, but without sugar's calories. After consumption,
sucralose passes through the body without being broken down for energy,
so it has no calories, and the body does not recognize it as a carbohydrate.

What research has been conducted to confirm the
safety of SPLENDA®?
The company is extremely proud of the strong clinical database that supports
the safety of sucralose, the sweetening ingredient in all SPLENDA®
Sweetener Products, and we recognize that this strong safety evidence is
one of the many reasons why SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener has been
the number one low calorie sweetener in the U.S. market place for more
than three years.
The safety of sucralose is well documented in more than 100 scientific
studies conducted over a 20-year period. In addition, sucralose and, specifically,
the safety data on sucralose, has been reviewed by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) and other national regulatory agencies, as well as
by international health authorities such as the World Health Organization,
and found to be safe for use by all consumers, including children, pregnant
women and people with diabetes.
Sucralose has been available in international markets for more than 13 years.
The FDA first approved the use of sucralose as a nonnutritive sweetener
in 1998 and expanded this approval in 1999. Currently, sucralose is permitted
for use in over 80 countries and it has never been required to carry any
safety information or warning statements on its labeling.

Is SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener
a sugar product?
SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener is not sugar, it is a non-caloric alternative
to sugar. It gets its sweetness from sucralose, also known as SPLENDA®
Brand Sweetener. SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener is manufactured through a
patented multi-step process that starts with cane sugar and selectively
replaces 3 hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with 3 chlorine
atoms. Chlorine is present naturally in many of the foods and beverages
that we eat and drink every day ranging from lettuce, mushrooms and table
salt. In the case of sucralose, its addition converts sucrose to sucralose.

used in the SPLENDA® Products is not natural. It is a no calorie sweetener
that is made from a process that starts with sugar. Although sucralose has
a structure like sugar and a sugar-like taste, it is not natural. The advertising
and packaging for SPLENDA® Products do not represent the product as
“natural.”

Why are the ingredients maltodextrin and dextrose
in SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener Products?
Sucralose, the no-calorie sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener,
is about 600 times sweeter than sugar. Like other tabletop sweeteners, the
granulated and packet products contain small amounts of carbohydrate (less
than 1 gram per serving) for consistent sweetening and to provide volume.
These bulking ingredients are dextrose (packets) and maltodextrin (packets
and granulated). However, the bulking agents provide so few calories per
serving that the FDA allows the SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener Products to
be called no-calorie sweeteners, because they provide less than five calories
per serving.

Can people with diabetes use SPLENDA® No Calorie
Sweetener?
Yes. Numerous studies have shown that SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener, or sucralose,
the sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, is suitable
for people with diabetes. Sucralose is not recognized by the body as sugar
or as a carbohydrate. It is not metabolized by the body for energy and does
not affect blood glucose levels. Sucralose has no effect on carbohydrate
metabolism or insulin secretion. Other ingredients in SPLENDA® No Calorie
Sweetener products, which are added to give necessary volume and texture,
add only a very small amount of carbohydrate per serving. These are common
carbohydrates (maltodextrin and/or dextrose) and are the same type of carbohydrates
used in other no calorie sweeteners. They contribute less than 5 calories
per serving, which, when used in moderation, (4 packets or 8 tsp. granulated)
is considered a free food by the American Diabetes Association.

Will consuming SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener cause
me to gain weight?
No. No calorie sweeteners (such as SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener) can
help you decrease calorie intake when used to replace sugar. In fact, the
use of no-calorie sweetener products to help decrease caloric intake in
conjunction with regular physical activity can help with weight management.
A recent small study done in 27 rats using saccharin ("A Role for Sweet
Taste: Calorie Predictive Relations in Energy Regulation by Rats") alleges
a link between low-calorie sweetener consumption and weight gain. However
this study needs to be considered in the proper scientific context, especially
since there are many other previously published research studies in humans
that reached the opposite conclusion. In fact, a 2007 study published in
Pediatrics®, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics,
found that using sucralose (SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener) or sucralose sweetened
beverages as part of an effort to decrease caloric intake by 100 calories
per day, and to increase physical activity by 2000 steps per day helped
to maintain and lower body mass index in the overweight children from the
111 families who participated in the "Families on the Move" program. It
is important that the cause of obesity is not over-simplified, as it has
many origins.
